Preparing your stay

Preparing for your stay in hospital

Below is some useful information to help you prepare for your stay in our establishment.

Hygiene

Pre-operative advice to prevent the risk of infection:

  • You must prepare your skin in accordance with the document given to you by your surgeon. Posters in the bathrooms will remind you of the pre-operative shower protocol.
  • It is forbidden to shave the surgical site with a mechanical razor; this will necessarily lead to your operation being postponed.
  • Fingernails and toenails must be trimmed, brushed and free of nail varnish, even if colourless.
  • Jewellery (including piercings) and make-up are forbidden.
  • You should arrive with your teeth brushed and your hair clean and tied back.

Post-operative advice to prevent the risk of infection:

  • Ensure satisfactory personal hygiene (daily washing with soap, oral and dental hygiene, wearing clean underwear and pyjamas).
  • Wash your hands as frequently as possible AND AS A STANDARD after using the toilet and after eating.
  • We provide you (and your visitors) with Hydroalcoholic Solution on the wards. Do not hesitate to use it as often as possible.
  • Ask the nursing staff to handle any venous catheters, drains or probes. Do not touch your dressings or scars.

Identitovigilance

Identitovigilance is a system for monitoring and managing the risks associated with patient identification.

Don't be surprised if, at every stage of your treatment, your identity is checked to ensure that you receive the care you deserve.

When you arrive on the ward, a nurse will give you an identification bracelet. This bracelet enables all the professionals involved in your care to check your identity throughout your stay and, more particularly, before any treatment, examination or operation is carried out outside your reception unit.

Please keep a close eye on all documents bearing your identity and report any discrepancies to us.

You will find here a film about the importance of patient identification in the care environment.

Pain

Don't hesitate to talk to staff and doctors about your pain. Our trained nursing staff are committed to treating your pain using special equipment and to giving you all the information and support you need.

The doctors, and in particular the anaesthetist, will tell you the most effective and appropriate ways of relieving your pain.

The nurses will help you to assess your pain, so that your treatment can be adapted if necessary.

Your participation is important, because the more information you can give about your pain, the more quickly and effectively your carers will be able to relieve it.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask the ward supervisor.

Medication

Any medication you are taking should be mentioned to your anaesthetist during the pre-anaesthetic consultation and to the nursing staff on the ward as soon as you arrive.

In accordance with regulations, and to avoid any interaction with medication, any personal medication you bring with you during your stay will be kept by the nursing staff and returned to you on your discharge. You therefore undertake not to keep any medicines with you during your stay.

Personal belongings

You must bring the following items for your stay:

  • Body linen
  • Pyjamas (+ 1 clean pair for the day before the operation)
  • Bathrobe - Slippers
  • Washing gloves (+ 1 clean for the day before the operation)
  • Towels (+ 1 clean for the day before the operation)
  • Soap and toiletries (men's beard razor)
  • Toothbrush + Toothpaste + Dental appliance kit
  • Hair dryer if likely to be used.

Decent dress is required for patients moving around the clinic.

Avoid keeping large sums of money, jewellery, etc. We advise you to deposit your valuables in the clinic safe against a receipt. You can collect them when you leave or during your stay, during opening hours.

Prostheses and glasses

If you wish to keep your prostheses (hearing aids, contact lenses) and/or glasses during your stay, remember to bring a storage box. We advise you not to put them in a handkerchief, compress or any other item that could be thrown away. You can leave them with a member of your family during periods when they are not essential. However, denture boxes may be provided by the department.

The clinic cannot be held responsible for the loss or damage of these items.
